SUMMARY:The Nuts and Bolts of becoming a Transplant Patient
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Keith Melancon\, Director of the George Washington Transplant Institute \nThis Program will help you: \n\nLearn what it means to be on the transplant list;\nUnderstand the transplant process from start to finish;\nDispel the myths of what is or is not involved;\nLearn tips for to help you succeed in the process.\n\nView the Recording: \n \nDownload the slides. \nAbout the Presenter: \nDr. Melancon is currently the Director of the George Washington Transplant Institute and the Medical Director of The Ron and Joy Paul Kidney Center at George Washington University Medical School. Dr. Melancon is a Professor of Surgery whose specialties include kidney\, pancreas and liver transplantation as well as laparoscopic kidney donor nephrectomy. His research interests have centered upon increasing access to health care for minority patients\, particularly in the field of organ transplantation. Dr. Melancon has spent his career trying to improve outcomes for the hardest to transplant patients and therefore has been an advocate for ABO incompatible organ transplantation\, paired kidney exchanges\, and immune system desensitization strategies. Recently Dr. Melancon and his team were the first ever to perform a fully ABO incompatible deceased donor kidney transplantation as well as a fully ABO incompatible living donor kidney transplantation in an individual with HIV infection. Dr. Melancon hopes that with novel immunosuppression protocols that organ transplants will begin to last for the life time of the patient and that true transplant tolerance can be achieved in the near future.

SUMMARY:Sepsis and Kidney Disease
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Sharon Hanson\, M.N.\, R.N.\, C.C.R.N\nSepsis Alliance with guest Stacy Slater \nJust over half of Americans have ever heard of sepsis. Learn about this often preventable and treatable condition to help save a life. The presentation not only will educate you on the signs and symptoms of sepsis\, but aims to engage and connect on a personal level for those with kidney disease. Sepsis is an extreme response to an infection. It is life threatening and\, without the right treatment\, can cause organ failure\, amputation\, and death. More than 1.6 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with sepsis every year – that’s one person every 20 seconds. Thousands of lives can be saved each year by simply raising awareness of its symptoms. Early recognition and treatment are key. \nLearning outcomes: \nAt the end of the session\, the attendee should be able to: \n\nDescribe what is sepsis\nRecognize the early warning signs of sepsis\nDiscuss the relationship of sepsis and kidney disease\nIdentify ways you can prevent sepsis\nExplain what to do if you think you or a loved one has sepsis\n\nView the Recording: \n \nDownload the slides.
